THE 10th ASSEMBLY  - LIVING THE WORD

AAPI Gathering Palatine, IL 2010
THE 10thASSEMBLY  - LIVING THE WORD

As a very diverse community scattered throughout the United States, we have unique challenges but also unique opportunities to proclaim the gospel, and live the word.  In fact, “Living the Word” was the theme of the 10th Assembly of the Association of Asians and Pacific Islanders (AAPI)-ELCA, convened at New Light Christian Church-ELCA in Palatine, IL, April 7-10, 2010.  I heard some participants say it was the best AAPI assembly they ever attended!

This gathering of 100 members both longtime and newer was a true celebration of God’s Holy Spirit working among us.   We worshipped together, listened keynote speaker Paul Nakamura, studied the Bible led by three different leaders, and took part in the introduction of our new Discipleship Training Series.  This training series is a major accomplishment in progress.

At this 10th assembly we also:

  • reviewed discipleship resources which will be printed for wider use at the end of 2010
  • received reports from the president, treasurer and the director for Asian and Pacific Islanders, Multicultural Ministries, ELCA
  • elected/re-elected executive committee officers:

President                      The Rev. Dr. Edmond Yee

Vice President            Ms. Esther Prabhakar

Secretary                     The Rev. Andrew Yee

  • adopted the biennial budget for 2010-2012
  • voted "yes" to a resolution encouraging more women's leadership in the ministries caucus and networks
  • honored five Asian leaders for their contributions to the Asian community. They are: 1) The Rev. Chi-shih Chen, Grayslake, IL; 2) Ms. Gladys Chow, Monterey Park, CA; 3) The Rev. Cheng-hsi Pan, Houston, TX; 4) The Rev. Miyaishi Kyuzo, Columbia, SC; 5) Mr. Al Sagar, Brandon, MS.
  • honored the Rev. Paul Nakamura at a banquet for his 55th year of ordination
  • fellowship among Asian ethnic caucuses
  • announced that our AAPI website development was back on track
  • marveled at the musical abilities of our network during Talent Night.

We are grateful to God and to you, my brothers and sisters in Christ, for your faithful dedication in our work.
